Taking care of your ornamental grasses

Turn your outdoor space into a versatile piece of art with our border plants. The maintenance-friendly and eye-catching garden grasses feel at home in any outdoor area. You can safely plant them all year round, but be careful with periods of frost. Because of their deep root system, it is essential that you plant the grasses deep enough in the soil. In general, you should dig a hole twice as deep as the root ball of the plant. Because of these roots, ornamental grasses survive very well during dry periods and therefore ask little of their owner. Ornamental grasses also look great in pots. When planting them in containers, it is important that the plant has enough space for its roots to grow. A large plant in combination with a fairly tight pot will therefore not be a good match. Just after planting, water the ornamental grasses with plenty of water. This way they will root faster. Cut the non-evergreen ornamental grasses back to about 15 centimetres in March and give them plenty of fertiliser in spring.

Popular garden grasses

One plant is not the same as the other, and ornamental grasses also have many appearances. These perennials come in different heights, as well as colours and flowering periods. Some varieties lose their leaves in the winter, but plenty of evergreen grasses thrive in autumn. There are even some ground-covering ornamental grasses or varieties that can grow very tall. Don't forget the sun-loving and shade-friendly varieties. Due to their variety, ornamental grasses are a popular plant among many garden designers. There is a beautiful ornamental grass for every garden. These are some of our favourite grasses:

  • Cortaderia selloana (Pampas grass)
  • Liriope muscari (Lily turf)
  • Luzula sylvatica (Greater wood-rush)
  • Ophiopogon japonicus (Mondo grass)

Combine grasses in the border

Ornamental grasses can be beautifully combined with other plants. Due to their refined form, grasses give a certain structure to the border that matches beautifully with colourful plants. Perennials with striking leaves can also be perfectly matched with ornamental grasses. When planting various ornamental grasses, it is good to take their flowering time into account. Early flowering ornamental grasses deserve a place in the first row of the border. The late growing grasses can serve as a nice backdrop. Between these two levels, plant some medium-sized shrubs or summer flowering perennials. Add some bedding plants here and there for a complete experience.
